An Intern Diary Entry
Over the past three months I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to intern at Style Counsel Melbourne, one of Australia’s leading fashion and lifestyle PR agencies.
When I walked in on my first day I definitely had stereotyped preconceptions of what it would mean to be an intern running through my head; coffee runs, steaming garments, and lots and lots of media lists. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Over the past few months I have experienced so many different aspects of agency life, I have been exposed to the good and the bad, the glamorous and the not so fancy, but most importantly I am leaving feeling ready to take on the big, scary world of Public Relations.
No one day as an intern is ever the same, and this has meant that I have been able to brush up on lots of different skills, and get a really insider look at the PR world. Throughout my internship I have had the opportunity to work across a number of Style Counsel’s clients, including Designer Brands’, Total Beauty Network, Joiy Wine, Oasis, Warehouse, INIKA Cosmetics, Affinitas, Parfait, Pappe and Luca Jouel. Some of the tasks that I have worked on have included writing media releases, creating style sheets, sending out product to media, (the first time I got to go through the samples wardrobe definitely felt like something out of The Devil Wears Prada), gifting product to influencers and helping to compile various reports for clients. My personal favourite was definitely working on social media, where I was involved in creating social media calendars and was even able to work on a social media shoot in action for an upcoming campaign.
One of the best parts about my internship was that I was always made to feel a part of the team. I was always invited to sit in on weekly team meetings, and being given my own tasks to work on independently definitely increased my confidence in my skill level. Most importantly, I was always made to feel like an extremely valued member of the team.
Being given the opportunity to work across this diverse range of accounts has definitely given me the chance to polish up my skills working in fashion, beauty and lifestyle, areas where I can definitely see myself in the future. My time at Style Counsel has been invaluable, and I couldn’t recommend the people or the experience more highly.
