People we dig

One sunny morning in November, a very special team hit the streets in Melbourne's CBD to shoot the first ever Youth Projects Community Service Announcement (CSA).

Grant, Mick, Toby and Perry and an enormously talented cast and crew united to work on this very special project, which aims to raise awareness about entrenched disadvantage and homelessness in Melbourne.

Stay tuned to catch a glimpse!

Grant Booker, Creative Director/Art Director

1. What is it like being a professional 'creative'?

Well how I feel about it depends on if I get work! If I get lots, it's a brilliant job. If I get nothing, then I go broke and it is not so fun! I am essentially solving peoples marketing problems in a creative way.

2. What did you like most about working on the CSA for Youth Projects?

I absolutely loved being involved. It is always nice to use your talent for a worthy cause and to help those less fortunate.

3. What do you hope to achieve with the CSA?

Hopefully we have done our job properly, and the donations come flowing in, ultimately helping Youth Projects.

4. How important do you think it is to put a face to problems like those that Youth Projects are trying to address?

When showing Youth Projects to the general public, you absolutely need to give them a face! You need to give them recognition in the community because many people are sadly still quite ignorant of Youth Projects and the work that they do. Giving it publicity, making it visual, is key in making it real.

5. Tell us a bit about what your process is when creating something like the Youth Projects CSA.

Mick and I go and just casually discuss ideas, coming up with three or four. Through a process of elimination we then get it down to the best two, which we present to the client. Hopefully they like it, and then the general public likes it, and gets the message behind it.

6. What is your favourite part of the job?

When it finishes! Really it is coming up with the idea and then seeing that idea made into a reality - the start and the finish.

1. What is it like being a wordsmith for a living?

Certainly in a project like this there is sense of fulfilment that not many other jobs give. You are giving back, because people's lives are at stake. That makes the job more rewarding, gives you a greater sense of accomplishment if you get it right.

2. How did you get involved in the Youth Projects CSA?

Grant and I are good friends, and we had always wanted to work together. He mentioned it to me, and it was really the ideal opportunity to put our heads together and see what we could come up with.

3. How did you go about creating a script for the CSA?

In a case like this where you are dealing with things such as kids with drugs and hopelessness, you can go one of two ways. You can sensationalise and highlight the problem, or you can show the solution, in this case, the end results of what Youth Projects has managed to achieve. Often it is easy to go down the scary, dirty path, showing people shooting up or what not, but that was not what we wanted for this. Instead we took a more meaningful path of education.

4. What do you hope to achieve with the CSA?

First and foremost, I hope that the recognition of what Youth Projects does gets out there to broader community. I don't think people know the extent of what these people are doing, so publicity and awareness is a crucial element.

A secondary, but equally important element is that hopefully it works and enlightens people enough to make them then care enough to open their wallets.

5. What do you love most about the job?

Coming up with ideas that hopefully make a difference. That is what I am paid to do. Basically, you start with a blank piece of paper and hopefully at the end of the day you can put something on it that changes lives and makes people think differently.

But you also need to have fun as well. Even when dealing with a serious issue, you need it to not to be totally serious, because people then respond more.

And finally, a big shout out to the amazing crew for all their hard work and generosity on this project
